Why is my 100 Mbps connection only ~12 MB/s?

Network links are rated in bits per second, but file sizes are measured in bytes. There are 8 bits in a byte, so 100 Mbps ÷ 8 ≈ 12.5 MB/s before protocol overhead.

How long to transfer a file at a given bandwidth?
